For public comment: AS 4758 Lifejackets

Standards Australia (SA) Technical Committee CS-060, Buoyancy aids, is currently revising AS 4758 - 2008 Parts 1, 2 and 3 on Personal Flotation Devices. The revised series of Standards will be renamed AS 4758 Lifejackets, as follows:
AS 4758         Lifejackets
AS 4758.1     Part 1: General Requirements
AS 4758.2     Part 2: Requirements and test methods
AS 4758.3     Part 3: Test methods
The objective of the AS 4758 series is to provide manufacturers, regulatory authorities and wearers with the requirements for lifejackets (also known as personal floatation devices, or PFDs) suitable for use by persons engaged in activities in or near water in a range of prevailing conditions.
Mr Nick Byrne, Chairman of Technical Committee CS-060 Buoyancy aids, said, “Many Australians take part in water activities each year for leisure or work. It is important to recognise that wearing a well-maintained lifejacket that is fit for purpose is one of the key factors in preventing drowning deaths.”
“It is therefore paramount to keep the requirements and test methods for lifejackets updated to suit emerging technologies and the changing needs of Australians. We welcome public comment on this revised Standard,” said Mr Byrne.
The proposed drafts of AS 4758 Parts 1, 2 and 3 will be open for public comment starting Friday, 30 January, 2015. The last day for public comment will be Friday, 3 April, 2015.
