2011 International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting
 The world’s leading electrotechnical experts descended en masse in Melbourne in October to attend the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) General Meeting hosted by Standards Australia.
“The event is the world’s most significant meeting of electrotechnical minds,” said Colin Blair, Chief Executive Officer, Standards Australia.

Industry Leaders Forum
 As part of our ongoing commitment to consumer protection, Standards Australia recently hosted the NSW Minister for Fair Trading, The Honourable Anthony Roberts MP, as our guest speaker at the Industry Leaders Forum.
The forum provided an opportunity for Standards Australia members and stakeholders to participate in high-level engagement with the Minister, and to hear first-hand NSW Government priorities and initiatives for the Fair Trading portfolio.

Electric Vehicle Standards Work Plan
The Victorian Government through Department of Transport has commissioned Standards Australia to implement a work program under its Standards development processes. An electric vehicles technical committee representing industry and government has been constituted and will have the responsibility of developing Australian Standards for electric vehicles. Experts Convene on Smart Grid
Industry leaders in Smart Grid technology participated in a forum as part Standard Australia’s hosting of the 2011 IEC General Meeting, with guest speakers including Dr George Arnold, Mr Tom Barry, Mr Richard Schomberg and Mr Mark McKenzie.

Legionnaires Protection: Four New Standards
Standards Australia has further refined its suite of standards protecting the community from the threat of legionnaires disease and other microbial organisms.
The revised standards improve what is already a very sound set of standards, to effectively manage the possible threat of legionnaires.
The objective of the revised Standard in the suite, AS/NZS 3666.4, is to provide a performance-based approach to air handling system maintenance to assist users in the control of micro-organisms.

Final Stages: Gender Inclusive Job Evaluation Standard
 The Standards Australia Committee on Gender Inclusive Job Evaluation and Grading has now considered all public comment on the draft Standard. The Standard will be ready for formal ballot early in 2012, and if approved will be published and available in the first quarter of 2012.
The voluntary Standard will provide a guide to minimising gender bias in job evaluation and grading; encourage structured participation in job evaluation and grading; and suggest principles which can be applied in the classification and grading of jobs.
Key experts in human resources management, job evaluation and grading, and other stakeholders, including employer groups, unions and academics, developed and refined the draft Standard. They took into account public comment received between July and September this year.
Standards Australia Elected to ISO Council
Standards Australia was elected to the Council of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) at the ISO General Assembly in New Delhi, India.

An important stage in the development of an Australian Standard is the public comment period in which drafts are made publicly available in order for members of the general public to contribute their views on the content. The public comment period is usually open for two to three months.
