Australia is one of world's largest producers of natural resources, such as coal, uranium, iron ore, nickel, bauxite, gold, lead, copper, zinc, mineral sands and diamonds.
In 2015, the sector accounted for approximately 9% of the Australian economy. Today, it accounts for over 50% of all goods and services produced in the country. Mining supports numerous other industries and sectors, and employs hundreds of thousands of Australians.
Standards Australia works with Australian stakeholders to develop Australian and International standards that are designed to improve efficiencies and increase international trade competitiveness and business performance.
Australia currently holds the Secretariats for ISO Technical Committee 27/SC 1, Coal preparation: Terminology and performance and ISO/TC 102/SC 2, Iron ore and direct reduced iron: Chemical analysis. A number of Australian experts are actively involved in the development of international standards in these fields.
Australian experts are also at the forefront of developing a new Australian Standard for coal density tracer testing, as well as creating a handbook to provide guidance on sampling in coal preparation plants.
