Focus on Standards Development

In November Standards Australia announced the immediate reopening of its funded and supported development pathways for new projects. This revised approach was developed in conjunction with, and supported by, the Commonwealth and major member groups.

In brief, if proposed Standards development projects can demonstrate the delivery of Net Benefit to communities of interest, and these projects cannot be financially resourced, then Standards Australia will allocate resources on a prioritised basis to see the work through to completion.

Prioritisation and selection of projects will be determined by the Standards Development Committee using a framework and criteria that will be agreed over the coming months. The resources available for Standards Australia funded development projects will be determined annually by Standards Australia’s Board, taking into account the necessity to operate on a sustainable basis.

It is important to note that our other pathways for Standards development remain in place and offer stakeholders choice in delivery timeframes and resources.

Over the coming months, Standards Australia will continue to focus on the important role of Standards development and work towards delivering the prioritisation framework and criteria for Standards Australia funded projects. We will build on Standards development project management processes, skills and operational efficiencies to deliver more timely outcomes and better utilise Committee Members’ valuable time. Strengthening stakeholder interaction and engagement with stakeholders on Standards work programs and priority needs will also be high on the agenda.

On behalf of the Executive Team, I am pleased to welcome Mr Richard Brooks, Dr Peter Burn and Mr Peter Cockbain who joined the Board in November. These three new Directors bring knowledge in Standards development, corporate governance, public policy and regulation to Standards Australia. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions made by the outgoing Directors Ms Louise Cox AM, Mr Adrian Smith, Mr Peter Hendy and Mr Philip Small.

I wish to take this opportunity to recognise the significant contribution, dedication and commitment made by Mr John Tucker, who steps down as Standards Australia’s CEO in December. For the past five years, John has led Standards Australia through a period of extensive change following the split from SAI Global, whilst also representing Australia and our organisation in important international Standards activities. We wish John all the best in his future ventures.

As 2009 draws to a close, I wish you all a safe and relaxing festive period and look forward to working with you in 2010.

Colin Blair
