Standards Australia is partnering with Tonga’s Ministry of Trade and Economic Development (MTED) to establish a national standards system that improves product quality, safety, and trade.
Project Purpose
To address this, Standards Australia and MTED developed the Tonga Standardisation Roadmap, a 10-year vision to build an efficient, internationally aligned system. 2025 marks the first year of implementation and a major step toward a stronger, future-focused standards framework that benefits businesses, consumers, and the wider economy.
The Roadmap aims to:
- Support exports by building trust in Tongan products.
- Protect consumers from unsafe imports.
- Promote environmental resilience.
- Strengthen infrastructure in key sectors including energy, construction, and health.
Project Scope
Key Deliverables:
- Establishment and operation of the Tonga Standards and Conformance Committee, with a governance framework in place.
- A stocktake of existing standards and sector-wide challenges.
- Communications and media campaigns to raise awareness of standards.
- Training programs to support the Committee’s ongoing work.
Project Outcomes
The project aims to establish Tonga’s first Standards and Conformance Committee, increase awareness of the role of standards, and strengthen the capacity of key stakeholders from government and industry on standards development and adoption process.
In the long term, the roadmap will guide Tonga toward a coherent, nationally aligned approach to standards development. This will improve the quality of goods and services, enhance competitiveness in international trade, build resilient infrastructure, and ensure standards reflect Tonga’s national priorities.
