Standards Australia adopts global quality standard in just two days
Statements
Standards Australia has recently published AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 for use in Australia and New Zealand, the new edition of the internationally recognised framework for quality management system requirements. ISO 9001:2026 was published internationally on 16 September, and Standards Australia formally adopted it just two days later. This marks the fastest adoption of an International Standard in Standards Australia’s history. The adoption maintains alignment between Australia and global best practice in quality management systems.
The purpose and value of AS/NZS ISO 9001
For more than three decades, AS/NZS ISO 9001 has helped organisations of all sizes and sectors drive better performance and embed quality into every aspect of a product or service, supporting more consistent outcomes and greater customer satisfaction. With rapid technological shifts and rising complexity, quality has become an active enabler of adaptability, operational resilience and sustainable long-term value.
Updates in the 2026 edition
The 2026 edition introduces practical, targeted updates to help businesses navigate change and reduce regulatory complexity. A significant shift in the standard is the clear separation of risks and opportunities. Instead of treating them as a single concept, the framework now guides organisations to proactively seek out new areas of innovation and market growth, rather than exclusively focusing on risk mitigation. It also places stronger emphasis on ethical behaviour and leadership, reinforcing the reality that robust processes must be driven by an organisation’s core values.
To support alignment across all sectors, the updated standard clarifies terminology and the exact intent behind the requirements, eliminating ambiguity for first-time users and small businesses. By ensuring closer alignment with other ISO management system standards, it allows businesses to integrate quality seamlessly across entire operations, creating unified and efficient systems.
Ensuring local priorities and expertise are embedded
Members of Standards Australia Technical Committee QR-008, comprising Australian and New Zealand experts representing key industry associations, contributed to the development of the International Standard. Their dedication ensures that this global benchmark reflects local priorities, translating deep technical authority into the invisible infrastructure that enables peace of mind and economic progress in Australia and New Zealand.
