Vale Dr Barry Inglis AO
Statements

We acknowledge the passing of Dr Barry Inglis AO and join the broader standards and conformance community in remembering Barry as a visionary leader and a true pioneer of metrology, both in Australia and internationally.
Barry played a central role in establishing the National Measurement Institute in 2004, becoming its first CEO and Chief Metrologist. He was a strong supporter of Australia’s standards and conformance system and a strong contributor to the international standards setting system. Notably, Barry made history as the first Australian, and only the second non-European, to be elected President of the International Committee for Weights and Measures. In that role, he helped lead the global work that resulted in the redefinition of the International System of Units in 2019, a milestone moment in the science of measurement.
Barry was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2020 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to science, engineering, and the advancement of measurement standards.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. His impact on the world of measurement will be felt for many years to come.
Vale.
