Spotlight on AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026: Quality management systems - Requirements

AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026, Quality management systems - Requirements, provides a framework that enables organisations to manage quality, meet applicable obligations and support continual improvement.
The newly released standard supersedes the 2016 edition and is an identical adoption of ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition of the International Standard.
What is AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026?
AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 provides a common framework for integrating quality-related processes, responsibilities, resources and information across an organisation.
A quality management system (QMS) brings together the processes, responsibilities, resources and information an organisation uses to manage quality. The standard provides a common framework for understanding the factors that affect an organisation’s activities, setting quality objectives, managing processes and evaluating performance.
The standard is intended for organisations that:
- need to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer requirements;
- need to address applicable statutory and regulatory requirements; or
- aim to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of a QMS.
The requirements are designed to apply across a range of organisational settings. AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 does not prescribe a uniform QMS structure or require organisations to arrange documented information according to its clause structure.
Readers should consult the standard directly for its complete requirements, definitions and information about applicability.
What does AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 cover?
AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 is structured around the principal elements of a QMS. At a high level, it covers the following:
- Context of the organisation: Factors relevant to the organisation’s purpose, strategic direction, and quality management system.
- Leadership: Leadership responsibilities, customer focus, quality policy, and organisational roles and authorities.
- Planning: Risks, opportunities, quality objectives and changes to the QMS.
- Support: People, infrastructure, organisational knowledge, competence, awareness, communication, and documented information.
- Operation: Planning and controlling the processes associated with providing products and services.
- Performance evaluation: Monitoring, measurement, analysis, internal audit, and management review.
- Improvement: Continual improvement, nonconformity, and corrective action.
The standard applies the process approach and the Plan–Do–Check–Act cycle. It also incorporates risk- and opportunity-based thinking within the broader QMS framework.
Together, these elements position quality management as an integrated system rather than a series of separate activities. Refer to AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 for the specific requirements applicable to each area.
What has changed in the 2026 edition?
The 2026 edition retains the established QMS structure while revising and clarifying several areas.
The Foreword identifies the following principal changes:
- Inclusion of selected management system terms and definitions.
- Introduction of quality culture and ethical behaviour.
- Clearer separation of risks and opportunities.
- Strengthened management of change.
- Enhanced explanatory content in Annex A.
- Removal of the previous Annex B, with relevant references included elsewhere.
Clause 3 now contains a limited number of core management system terms and definitions. AS/NZS ISO 9000:2026 remains the normative reference for quality management fundamentals and vocabulary.
Quality culture and ethical behaviour are addressed in provisions concerning leadership, awareness and the environment for operating processes. The revised edition also distinguishes more clearly between risks and opportunities.
Requirements relating to changes to the QMS have been strengthened. The revision places greater emphasis on planning, communicating, monitoring and reviewing changes while retaining the established structure of the standard.
Annex A has also been expanded to provide informative clarification on the structure, terminology and intent of the clauses.
Organisations should consult AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 for the complete requirements and to determine how the changes apply to their circumstances.
Who is AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 for?
Because its requirements are generic, AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 can be used by organisations of different types and sizes across all sectors.
AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 may be relevant to organisations establishing, maintaining or reviewing a QMS, as well as to professionals working in organisational leadership, quality management, operations, assurance, internal auditing or the management of externally provided processes, products and services.
It applies to both products and services, making it relevant to organisations with diverse operating models, structures and customer relationships.
The application of the requirements will depend on the organisation’s context, QMS scope, activities, products and services. Organisations should consult the standard directly when determining which requirements apply.
Why does quality management matter?
Establishing and implementing a QMS can support improved organisational performance, customer satisfaction and sustained success.
AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 identifies several potential benefits of implementing a QMS, including:

- facilitating opportunities to enhance customer satisfaction;
- addressing risks and opportunities associated with organisational context and objectives; and
- demonstrating conformity with QMS requirements.
AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 is based on the following seven quality management principles:
- Customer focus
- Leadership
- Engagement of people
- Process approach
- Improvement
- Evidence-based decision-making
- Relationship management
These principles provide the foundation for the standard. Further information about the principles and quality management terminology is available in AS/NZS ISO 9000:2026.
Relationship with other standards
AS/NZS ISO 9001:2026 refers to other publications in the ISO 9000 series.
