Project Purpose

One of the key challenges facing businesses in both countries is the differences in standards and conformance requirements between Australia and India. Diverging standards can create barriers to market entry, cause costly delays, and increase compliance costs for companies operating across both markets.

The India–Australia Trade Enabling Project seeks to pave the way in overcoming these challenges by bringing together Standards Australia, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), and key industry stakeholders to identify trade barriers, promote collaboration, and align standards in three priority sectors:
  • Green Hydrogen
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) / Call Centres
  • Food and Beverages
By strengthening cooperation and working towards standards harmonisation in these sectors, the project aims to create a more seamless trade environment that supports innovation, sustainability, and shared economic growth.

Project Scope

The project will deliver a series of activities designed to improve collaboration and market access, including:

  • Stakeholder engagement to identify trade barriers and opportunities, including workshops
  • Development of sector-specific roadmaps and playbooks to guide collaboration
  • Publication of a Standards Market Potential Report to shape future cooperation
  • Delivery of an Australia- India trade enabling summit

Project Outcomes

Through this initiative, Standards Australia and BIS will help businesses in both countries navigate regulatory challenges and build stronger, more resilient trade partnerships. The project will:

  • Identify and address key barriers to market access
  • Strengthen collaboration between the two national standards bodies and industry stakeholders
  • Promote the harmonisation and alignment of standards to make traded easier between Australia and India
  • Provide practical tools and insights to enable trade between the two countries
