Building trust in quantum: Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s Collaborative Quantum Roadmap for a connected future

December 1, 2025

Statements

Standards Australia is proud to announce the completion of the Strengthening Collaboration on Standardisation for Quantum Technologies project.

As the first quantum initiative delivered under the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance, the project set a foundation for more inclusive, harmonised approaches to quantum technology standards across the Asia–Pacific region.

As quantum technologies rapidly evolve, the need for coordinated regional action has never been greater. This project responds to that challenge by supporting interoperability, reducing technical barriers to trade, and ensuring developing economies are not left behind in the global quantum transition.

Advancing Quantum Standards Collaboration in APEC

The project has culminated in the release of a Final Report and a collaboratively developed Quantum Standards Roadmap, shaped through a multi-stage process including a hybrid workshop in the Republic of Korea, an online collaboration platform, and a post-workshop webinar involving participants from a broad range of economies.

The roadmap outlines practical actions to advance a coordinated and future-ready quantum standards ecosystem, across the APEC region. Focusing on key areas such as awareness, standards development, talent, and policy alignment.

The roadmap outlines initiatives aimed at strengthening regional capability, including increased participation in international standardisation, knowledge-sharing workshops, and targeted training programs. These actions provide a clear pathway for economies and stakeholders to work together in shaping the future of quantum standards.

Mr Michael Egan, Head of Delegation for IEC/ISO JTC 3, Quantum Technologies, and Director of Quantum Technologies at KPMG Australia said: “Quantum technologies are reshaping the future of computing, communications, and security. This roadmap is a critical step in ensuring all economies, regardless of size or maturity, can participate in and benefit from this transformation.”

Rod Balding, Chief Executive Officer, Standards Australia, added: “This project reflects our commitment to inclusive innovation. By working together across borders, we can build trusted, interoperable quantum systems that support economic growth, digital resilience, and regional cooperation.”

Standards Australia thanks the APEC Sub-Committee on Standards and Conformance (SCSC), the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and all participating economies for their collaboration.

Together, we are laying the foundation for a secure, inclusive, and standardised quantum future.
