Standards Awards 2025: Celebrating excellence in standards development

Meet the winners of the 2025 Standards Awards, announced at a ceremony in Melbourne on May 23.

These awards honour individuals making exceptional contributions to standards development. This year, two new categories were introduced to recognise the vital role of organisations in shaping Australia’s standards landscape.

W.R. Hebblewhite Medal: John Furbank

Awarded for his outstanding contributions to consumer protection and product safety. John has been a key figure in standards development since 1978. With a career spanning over 50 years, his work continues to influence standards both nationally and globally.

Meritorious Contribution (National): Sean Bassett

With more than 25 years of service across 20+ technical committees, Sean has contributed to standards in areas such as fire safety, children’s nightwear, and personal flotation devices. His leadership and technical expertise have had a lasting impact.

Meritorious Contribution (International): James Sankar

Recognised for advancing international standards in smart cities and digital infrastructure, James has led global initiatives in Wi-Fi, cybersecurity, and sustainability, building strong partnerships across the UK, Europe, and Australia.

Emerging Leader: Osama Ali

Osama (Oz) has transformed the ME-063 Earthmoving Equipment committee, expanding its portfolio from 60 to over 160 standards and setting a new benchmark by publishing the highest number of standards in a single year. A former Young Leader and NEXTgen Program alumnus, he continues to champion the next generation of standards professionals.

Innovation: Dr Kala Senathirajah

Dr. Kala has made significant contributions to water flow measurement and microplastics management standards. With 25+ years of cross-sector experience, she brings innovation and sustainability to the forefront of standards development.

Outstanding Committee: BD-066 Prefabricated Concrete Elements

Chaired by Paul Uno since 2011, this committee developed the AS 3850 suite, including the world’s first standard for prefabricated concrete elements—setting a global benchmark for safety and efficiency in construction.

Corporate Commitment to Standards *new*: Energy Queensland

This new award category celebrates organisations that show exceptional dedication to standardisation, contributing their staff’s expertise and time for the benefit of the Australian community. Energy Queensland, Australia’s largest government-owned electricity company, is recognised for its deep commitment to standardisation. Through active participation in committees and industry collaboration, its 9,000+ employees have helped shape countless standards and guidelines.

Nominating Organisation *new*: Australian Industry Group (Ai Group)

Introduced in 2025, this award recognises Nominating Organisations that demonstrate excellence and leadership in standards development by actively supporting and empowering their contributors. Representing over 60,000 businesses, Ai Group is honoured for its leadership in standards development. Its active support of contributors and broad sector representation ensures strong industry and community outcomes.
