From homes to holiday parks: Updated standard supports safer bunk beds
Statements
With school holidays underway and many families travelling, hosting sleepovers or accommodating extra guests, bunk beds and other elevated beds will be in frequent use across homes, holiday accommodation and camps. Whether staying with relatives, visiting a holiday park or heading away on camp, elevated beds are a common feature of holiday experiences.
To help support safer sleeping environments, Standards Australia has published the revised AS/NZS 4220:2026 Bunk beds and other elevated beds, updating the safety requirements for the design, construction, testing and labelling of bunk beds and other elevated beds.
The revised standard provides manufacturers, suppliers, regulators and conformity assessment bodies with a contemporary framework to help reduce the risk of falls, entrapment and other injuries associated with elevated sleeping products.
Superseding the 2010 edition, AS/NZS 4220:2026 includes updated requirements for guardrails, access systems, structural integrity, stability, product markings and consumer information. The changes reflect current safety expectations and provide clearer guidance to support the manufacture and assessment of safer products.
The publication of the updated standard is a timely reminder of the role standards play in everyday life. From products used in homes to accommodation, schools and camps, standards provide a trusted framework that supports safety, quality and confidence for consumers, businesses and regulators.
Manufacturers, suppliers, designers, regulators and other stakeholders are encouraged to review the revised requirements and adopt the latest guidance to support the delivery of safer bunk beds and other elevated beds.
