In Australia, the hydrogen sector is seeing consistent growth and its role across the Australian industry to decarbonise, improve fuel security, and create new investment opportunities is being recognised. Standards Australia has been working with stakeholders across government and industry, as well as collaborating internationally, to understand where the opportunities lay for hydrogen.
The global demand for hydrogen exported from Australia could be more than $50 billion by 2050.1 Therefore it is more important now than ever that the appropriate standards are in place to help with the safe and effective scale-up of the technology.

Integral to its use in Australia is Standards Australia committee ME-093, Hydrogen Technologies. These industry experts are instrumental in development and adoption of hydrogen standards, working closely with key stakeholders to move Australia towards a more sustainable future. The committee’s terms of reference covers all aspects of hydrogen, including the production, storage and handling, measurement, transport, transmission and distribution of hydrogen in its pure form, blended with another fuel gas. In May 2020, the committee established five working groups tasked with overseeing and developing guidance in the following areas:

  • Production, Handling and Storage
  • Pipeline and Gas Distribution Networks
  • End Use Utilisation
  • Fuel Cell Applications
  • Mobility Applications

2020 saw the adoption of eight key hydrogen standards with the work to bring further guidance to the sector ongoing. The purpose of this page is to provide a one-stop shop for stakeholders to find key information related to the development of hydrogen standards.

ME-093 Hydrogen Technologies Strategic Work Plan (PDF) summarises
the work of Standards Australia’s ME-093, Hydrogen Technologies
committee and highlights its   future activities.

Hydrogen Standards Information Sheets

The information sheets below provide guidance on the application of relevant standards to common hydrogen activities. The intent of these documents is to provide clarity and additional information for regulators, project proponents, engineers and other stakeholders with an interest in the standards relevant to hydrogen.

The first in this series is on Hydrogen Refuelling Stations. This document is for information purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for appropriate consultation with the authorities and project experts.
