Quantum Technologies

The development of computers, sensors and communications systems based on the principles of quantum mechanics is set to drive a technological revolution in the coming decades – one that will impact every sector of the economy.

The Australian government predicts Australia’s quantum technology industry will be worth a projected $6 billion and will employ 19,400 Australians by 2045. Standards Australia is actively contributing to this future as a founding member of the international standards committee IEC/ISO JTC 3, Quantum Technologies. We are leading work on the committee’s strategic business plan and quantum computing initiatives.

At the national level, we established Technical Committee QT-001, Quantum Technologies, to shape international standards and develop as well as adopt Australian Standards for local use. The committee is chaired by Dr Cathy Foley, Australia’s former Chief Scientist, and brings together representatives from industry, academia, Commonwealth and state governments, consumer and professional associations.

IEC hosted and has made available an International Year of Quantum Science and Technology webinar on partnership and collaboration in quantum standards featuring Michael Egan from Australia.

We welcome the input of quantum experts and have a range of opportunities to participate in shaping international quantum standards development. Please contact us at quantum@standards.org.au to express your interest.
